The 2019 Vaikobi Auckland King & Queen of the Harbour will be brought to you by Vaikobi and Canoe Racing New Zealand (CRNZ) on 30th March 2019, as New Zealand’s iconic national Ocean Racing championships. For this the 18th year of this event, we will once again feature SUP, Surfski and Waka-Ama categories, and is expected to attract 150 local and international paddler entries. Having been part of the sponsorship team for the last 5 years we are thrilled to have Vaikobi back this year as Naming Rights sponsor, and with Pat Langley's insights into paddlesports, we couldnt have a more qualified Master Of Ceremonies!

The 2019 Vaikobi Auckland King and Queen of the Harbour will be brought to you by Pacific Ocean Paddlers and Vaikobi on 30th March 2019. The event also traditionally features SUP and Waka-Ama categories, and will see the Auckland Harbour and the Hauraki Gulf play host to the best Surfski, SUP and Waka-Ama paddlers this country has to offer, along with some pretty solid international competition. For this the 18th annual running of this iconic event, the event will also host to prize-giving for the highly successful New Zealand Paddle Seriesnow in its second year.

Takapuna Based Courses: The event is the Canoe Racing New Zealand sanctioned National Championship Ocean Racing event for Surfski and also features SUP and Waka-Ama W1 and W2 categories, over a long course (26km), and short courses (11km). Race Headquarters will be Takapuna Boating Club this year, which featured as the host venue for the 2017 World Masters Games, which will be the start and/or finish location, and the prize-giving venue.


Takapuna Boating Club (37 The Strand, Takapuna will again play host to this years event, with there-and-back Short Courses starting from here, and Long Courses finishing here for the prizegiving.  



Once again this year we have a number of course options for all prevailing wind directions, all finishing at Race Headquarters, Takapuna Boating Club, The Strand, Takapuna.

  • GNARLY NORTHERNER 26KM (Army Bay to Takapuna, which works well in the Northerlies.)
  • MARAETAI MIXER 26KM  (Maraetai Beach to Takapuna, offering an awesome downwind experience in Easterlies.)
  • HOBSONVILLE HUMDINGER 23KM (NZ's quintessential downwind harbour paddle - Hobsonville to Takapuna for those Westerlies.)
  • RANGITOTO RINGBUSTER 26KM (If there is no wind, the course will see Paddlers race around spectacular Rangitoto Island, as the race used to be run a number of years back.)
  • SHORT COURSE 11KM (Takapuna there-and-back safe course off the beach)

Course Options



The following 5 Items of Compulsory Safety Gear will be checked prior to paddlers accessing the water on race-day 

5 ITEMS OF COMPULSORY GEAR: All Competitors, All Distances, except Prone Paddlers who must be affixed to their board via a leash:

1. Personal Flotation Devices (Lifejackets, PFD’s): These must be worn by all participants, and may not be affixed to craft only. Surfski paddlers must wear an approved jacket type PFD. Waka and SUP paddlers may wear the belt type such as the Hutchwilco. (Full New Zealand Standards NZ5823:2001 Type 403 compliance criterion is described HERE).

2. Leg Leash: All competitors must wear a suitable Leg-Leash, affixing the participant to their craft. These will be available for purchase at race registration for those competitors who do not have one.

3. At Least 1 item of High-Vis Paddle-wear must be worn, with the official race top counting. Participants are recommended to also wear an additional high-vis item such as Vaikobi PFD, or high-vis Cap.

4. Charged Mobile Phone in Water-proof Pouch: Again, this must be affixed to participants, pre-programmed with the Race Organiser's number: 0272678577

5. Marine Flares: Orange-smoke, Red-handheld or Parachute flares are all excellent for attracting attention during daylight hours, and it is a requirement that these are affixed to the participants (not their craft). These are available for purchase ($35) or hire ($15) at Registration.


  • -> Paddle-wear Suitable for conditions: Dress for the conditions. A variety of paddle-wear product is available for purchase at registration. Race Organisers will be on the look-out for inappropriately attired athletes.

  • -> Whistle: Participants are advised to also carry a pea-less whistle affixed to their PFD to attract attention.

  • -> PLB or Personal Locator Beacon: These are affordable and portable, and competitors are recommended to carry one on their person.

The Online Registration also requires all participants to agree to the specific terms and conditions listed below, highlighting that the event is a physical one in nature, and that the participants are not aware of any medical reasons why they should not compete.

You are required to agree to the below terms and conditions to be eligible for participation in the Auckland King & Queen Of The Harbour race, scheduled for 30th March 2019 respectively (hereafter referred to as the Event.)

1.I have read the entry form for this Event and understand that this Event is a demanding, physical event. I have trained for this Event and I am not aware of any medical condition or impairment that will be detrimental to my health if I participate in this Event. In the event that I become aware of any medical condition or impairment, or am otherwise sick or injured prior to the Event, I will withdraw from the Event. 2. I acknowledge that participating in this Event may involve a real risk of serious injury or even death from various causes including; over exertion, dehydration, and accidents with other participants, spectators or ocean users. 3. I acknowledge that it is a condition of participating in this Event that I do so at my own risk. I accept all risks and in consideration of my entry, I, my heirs, executors and administrators release and forever discharge race organizers Pacific Ocean Paddlers, Takapuna Boating Club, Canoe Racing New Zealand, volunteers assisting with this Event, all sponsors, partners, producers, their agents and representatives, and any person or body, directly or indirectly associated with the event (hereafter referred to a Organizers) of all liabilities, claims, damages or costs which I may have against them arising out of, or in any way connected with my participation in the Event. I understand this waiver includes claims based on negligence, action, or inaction of any of the above parties. This release continues forever and binds my heirs, successors, executors, personal representatives and assigns. 4. I also acknowledge that it is a condition of participating in this Event that I do so at my own risk. I accept all risks and in consideration of my entry and forever discharge Pacific Ocean Paddlers, all Organisers as defined above or associated clubs and organisations indirectly or directly involved in the Event. I agree that should the Event be cancelled for any reason whatsoever, entry fees will not be refunded and no liability of any kind whatsoever will attach to the Organizers. 6. Entries cancelled 7 days prior to race day will be refunded in full. Entries cancelled 6 days or less from race day will not be refunded. 7. I have carefully read this entry form and agree to abide by all the rules and directions of all race officials on the day of the race. 8. If signing for a person under 18 years of age, I certify that I am the parent/guardian of the 'minor' who will be participating on the day of the Event. In consideration of the Organizers accepting the minor's application to participate in the Event, I agree to indemnify and shall keep indemnified the Organizers in respect of any losses they or any of them may suffer as a consequence of any claim/s by the minor and to the same extent as any other competitor indemnifies the Organizers pursuant to the above legal declaration.
