1. EVENT OVERVIEW

The 2017 Giltrap | VW Auckland King & Queen of the Harbour will be brought to you by Pacific Ocean Paddlers on 28th & 29th April 2017, and doubles as New Zealand’s iconic national Ocean Racing championships, as well as race number one for the 2017 World Surfski Series. The event also traditionally features SUP and Waka-Ama categories, and will see the Auckland Harbour and the Hauraki Gulf play host to the best Surfski, SUP and Waka-Ama paddlers this country has to offer, along with some pretty solid international competition. For this the 16th annual running of this iconic event, the 2017 Giltrap | VW Auckland King & Queen of the Harbour will feature the NZ Prone Paddle Board Championships, brought to you by Waterman Store where a number of elite and amateur prone board paddlers from around the world will vie for the coveted Waterman Trophy on the latest DEEP designed boards.

The 2017 Giltrap | VW Auckland King & Queen of the Harbour event will take place over the weekend of 28th and 29th April, with the 30th April reserved as a contingency day in the event of unsafe weather on the Saturday. Friday 28th will see the Registration Prologue Event take place at Vector WERO Whitewater Park. Exciting Long and Short Courses have been selected to predominantly cater for downwind paddling. These courses will see competitors racing over the best downwind conditions the Hauraki Gulf has to offer, with a post event barbeque on the beach and prize-giving for the competitors, family and spectators. The weekend will see a number of visiting 2017 World Surfski Series Champions and leading paddlers, ISA SUP and Paddleboard World Champions and leading paddleboarders, returning Olympians and other celebrities in their own right, with technique clinics, world class racing and sponsor/vendor stalls and demonstrations.

2. PRIZES

Giltrap Volkswagen Weekend Drive-Away Prizes!

Our wonderful naming rights sponsor Giltrap Volkswagen have pledged that the 2017 King and Queen of the Harbour (from the 27km Oceanski event) will each be given the keys to a select, latest-range, brand new Volkwagen vehicles, for a full-use, full gas-tank, Friday-Monday drive-away adventure. These will be scheduled by the winners with Giltrap-Volkswagen directly, and if I were to put my money on it, would probably coincide with some fairly wicked downwind conditions! So Mark Wadman - better get those roof-racks on those VW's! There are two conditions of course: Firstly, sadly you cant have the red-and-white Pacific-Ocean-Paddler-mobile (that one belongs to your event organiser heehee.) And secondly, as these prizes are redeemable for the next 6 months, if the King and Queen of the Harbour titles fall to international Paddlers who are not Auckland based, or who cannot for whatever reason take up this offer, the prize will fall to the runner-ups.

What Race Categories Are Available?

The below categories will be recognised, irrespective of how many paddlers there are in each category on race day.

What Is The Cash Prize Pool?

The Giltrap|Volkswagen 2017 Auckland King and Queen of the Harbour, as Race 1 of the World Surfski Series, attracts a total CASH PRIZE POOL of more than $18,000 NZD!  While a number of the above listed categories attract cash prizes, the following major cash prize categories offer significant cash prizes:

This year, one lucky paddler is going to walk away from the Prizegiving with a Nelo 560, top-shelf, Carbon Epoxy Vacuum surfski, valued at NZD $7000! Irrespective of whether you are a Prone, SUP, Waka paddler, one thing is for sure: if you are the winner of this incredible spot-prize, you are going to be a surfski paddler! 5. TIMINGS AND RACE SCHEDULE

Before we get into the details of the event, I wanted to take a moment to recognise that event organisers have published a number of course options and event details that have had to be subsequently changed or altered. Please accept our apologies for this - while sequencing the event within the World Masters Games window has allowed many non-local & international athletes to take part in both events for the same/similar accomodation, travel and boat hire costs, there have been a number of other consequences that could not have been reasonably foreseen during early planning stages. A number of sponsorship exclusions zones and zone conflicts across greater Auckland have created a real challenge for organisers, requiring substantial additional planning. A number of traditional course start/finish locations are simply not available this year for us. While these are an inconvenience, we have worked through these issues and are happy to report that an amazing event is on the books for Paddlers this year, with a number of new and exciting elements! Thank you paddlers for your ongoing support and patience here.

Wednesday 26th - Friday 28th April: Pick Up Official Race Top/Cap at Giltrap Volkswagen

This year we have been very fortunate to have secured a naming rights sponsor in Glitrap Volkswagen, which has been a very large component of keeping the 2017 Giltrap | VW Auckland King & Queen of the Harbour event on the calendar for the 16th consecutive year. Giltrap Volkswagen are fantastic supporters of the event, providing prizes, financial support, the post-event barbeque, marketing support, subsidising our high quality Vaikobi High-Vis Race Tops and of course the Official Event Vehicle branding. Pacific Ocean Paddlers are very keen to see this support continue, and are asking Paddlers in return to show their support by visiting the Giltrap Volkswagen showroom to uplift your free Official Race Top and free Official Race Cap, meet the team & join Giltrap’s mailing list for exclusive invites and special offers across their Volkswagen range. Paddlers that visit the Giltrap Volkswagen showroom will also have the opportunity to see the some of the brand new craft, for example the NELO 560 SCS surfski Major-Spot-Prize, the latest DEEP 12'6" Prone Board, the new EPIC V12 surfski and the latest 14' 'ALL STAR' Starboard.

Friday 28th April: Vector WERO Whitewater Park Prologue & Event Registration

A Prologue event will be held on WERO Whitewater Park, Manukau, commencing 15H30, and finishing 19H30. Event organisers are aware that for some Paddlers, traveling across Auckland to reach Manukau by 15H30 will involve traffic, and a requirement to leave work early. For safety reasons, the WERO Whitewater Park can only operate untill sundown (17H30), and while organisers recognise this is an ask, this part of the event is truely something special. And arguably the most fun you will ever have with a pair of paddles. For many this represents a unique opportunity to experience a world-leading white-water course. No experience necesarry, all gear provided, and included in your entry fee, organisers are convinced that this will be worth the inconveneince, so talk to your boss now about sneaking off early on Friday:-)

All competitors are required to have registered before the Race Briefing. There will be no further registrations for the 2017 Giltrap|VW King and Queen of the Harbour event accepted beyond 17H00 on Friday 28th April 2017. The Prologue event is a fun event that is designed to encourage engagement of competitors with the Event Sponsors, and provide athletes with access to WERO Whitewater Park, which for most paddlers will be the first time that they have been exposed to a world class facility of this nature. Event Partners will have their display stands set up, and the latest craft will be on display. Competitors will receive their Race-Packs (empty) and will be required to visit all sponsor stands to receive their race-pack-goodies. Once their card has been stamped by all sponsors, this card will go into the lucky draw for a series of spot-prizes to be awarded same evening. A number of paddle-wear, pre/post-race hydration/nutrition products and other sponsors product will be available for sale at the Registration for your last-minute needs. The Race Briefing at 18H00 requires all athletes to attend, and race organisers will confirm all transport arrangements and related logistics, and of course final course confirmation.

(Above): The Vector WERO Whitewater Park - All equipment provided - just bring your paddle-wear, a towel and a change of clothes for afterwards. Paddlers will race as part of teams around the Grade 2 course, with the team completing the most laps in the alloted hour the winner.

6. RACE COURSE CONFIRMED!

The 2017 Giltrap | VW Auckland King & Queen of the Harbour event will take place over the weekend of 28th and 29th April. Friday 28th will see the Registration Prologue Sprint event take place at Wero Whitewater Park, with the main event on the Saturday 29th April. Long and Short Courses have been selected to predominantly cater for downwind paddling, meaning that courses need to be selected that offer 60% of the course length with the wind from behind. This is both a safety factor, and a requirement of the World Surfski Series.

UPDATE Wed 26th April 2017 8PM: Weather forecast for Saturday has been stable for a few days - some of us have obviously been praying for wind, and some beautiful downwind racing conditions are forecast for Saturday with a warm Northerly flow of the North Island of New Zealand. Conditions are looking to favour 'The Long Bay Leveler' for the 27km Long Course, with Paddlers starting in Long Bay, and finishing at Eastern Beach. As this course has been locked into safety plans and Coastguard's published Notices To Mariners, this course as announced will not change. This notice represents the final course announcement for this years event on this website.

(N’ly wind) In this wind, locals know the best bits of this course well. Providing some thrilling downwind racing in the 2015 King and Queen of the Harbour event, paddlers start at beautiful Long Bay Regional Park, and surf downwind wind against tide through the Rangitoto Channel, to finish at Eastern Beach, near Half Moon Bay, with Short Course paddlers will get to experience Browns Island and the Musick Point cliffs.

27km Course: This is the 27km World Surfski Series race for Surfski (both Ocean ski, SLS Spec ski categories and Doubleski), SUP and Waka-Ama (OC1 and OC2). ‘THE LONG BAY LEVELER’ course follows a similar course having featured over a number of King and Queen of the Harbour events historically, and is favoured in N’ly conditions. Long Course Paddlers start at well-known Long Bay Regional Park, heading off the beach and out to the yellow channel marker buoy 2.4kms off shore, where they will turn clockwise to head south east against the tide and with the wind past the iconic Rangitoto Island volcano, to finish at Eastern Beach near Half Moon Bay. Paddlers will be required to sweep between Rangitoto Lighthouse and Rangitoto Island. At the conclusion of this race, competitors and spectators will be treated to a beach barbeque put on by Giltrap|VW.

THE WATERMAN STORE NZ PADDLEBOARD CHAMPS

The Waterman Store NZ Paddleboard Champs is a 12km and 6km event showcasing the elite Prone Paddleboarders, but also acts as the short-course option for Surfski (both Ocean ski, SLS Spec ski categories and Doubleski), SUP and Waka-Ama (OC1 and OC2).

12km Course: The start at Little Bucklands Beach will have paddlers head off northwards, sticking close to the coast and surfing the outgoing tide. Once clear past Musick Point, paddlers head straight for the eastern side of beautiful Browns Island, circling the island anti-clockwise, before heading back to complete the 12km loop at Eastern Beach. Paddlers are advised to stay as close to the coast as possible to avoid the outgoing tide.

6km Course: Like the 12km competitors, the 6km paddlers will head off northwards off the same start line, sticking close to the coast and surfing the outgoing tide. Paddlers will turn anti-clockwise around the cliffs of the sheltering Musick Point, before heading back to complete the 6km loop at Eastern Beach. Paddlers are advised to stay as close to the coast as possible to avoid the outgoing tide.

(Above): Northerly conditions favour 'The Long Bay Leveler' course option - this is the official Long Course selected for this year's World Surfski Series event.

WHAT WILL THESE CONDITIONS BE LIKE? Forecasted gusts up to 23 knots with a following sea represent some pretty awesome downind racing conditions for most paddlers with a moderate or higher level of downwind experience. Wave size could get up to 1.3m, and while conditions will be warm, the weather will be overcast with rainy patches. If you are registered for the Long Course and have not paddled a 2-3 hour-plus paddle in these conditions, or if you are unsure what 23 knot downwind conditions are like for a blue-water course like this, we need to talk: Discuss this with your Race Director if you are unsure. We have a very professional water safety crew out there this weekend and on the shore, but along with all the safety requirements, Paddlers will need to have a solid remount ability in these conditions. There are awesome short course options and we are happy to make changes to your category.

7. COMPULSORY SAFETY GEAR

The following 5 Items of Compulsory Safety Gear will be checked prior to paddlers accessing the water on race-day (Please see special note below for Prone Paddlers).

5 ITEMS OF COMPULSORY GEAR: All Competitors, All Distances, except Prone Paddlers who must be affixed to their board via a leash:

1. Personal Flotation Devices (Lifejackets, PFD’s): These must be worn by all participants, and may not be affixed to craft only. Surfski paddlers must wear an approved jacket type PFD. Waka and SUP paddlers may wear the belt type such as the Hutchwilco. (Full New Zealand Standards NZ5823:2001 Type 403 compliance criterion is described HERE).

2. Leg Leash: All competitors must wear a suitable Leg-Leash, affixing the participant to their craft. These will be available for purchase at race registration for those competitors who do not have one.

3. At Least 1 item of High-Vis Paddle-wear must be worn, with the official race top counting. Participants are recommended to also wear an additional high-vis item such as Vaikobi PFD, or the offical Race Cap.

4. Charged Mobile Phone in Water-proof Pouch: Again, this must be affixed to participants, pre-programmed with the Race Organiser's number: 0272678577

5. Marine Flares: Orange-smoke, Red-handheld or Parachute flares are all excellent for attracting attention during daylight hours, and it is a requirement that these are affixed to the participants (not their craft). These are available for purchase ($35) or hire ($15) at Registration.

ADDITIONAL RECOMMENDED GEAR:

  • -> Paddle-wear Suitable for conditions: Dress for the conditions. A variety of paddle-wear product is available for purchase at registration. Race Organisers will be on the look-out for inappropriately attired athletes.

  • -> Whistle: Participants are advised to also carry a pea-less whistle affixed to their PFD to attract attention.
  • -> PLB or Personal Locator Beacon: These are affordable and portable, and competitors are recommended to carry one on their person.

PRONE PADDLEBOARDERS:

  • Prone Paddleboarders are required to be affixed to their boards via a leash, and are not required to wear or carry PFD’s, Mobile Phones or Flares.

8. ACCOMODATION OPTIONS

With World Masters Games on at the same time, Internationals are advised to get their accommodation sorted as soon as possible, if not already booked. While the the original plan was to have course options centric around Okahu Bay, Orakei, this is no longer possible due to council planning constraints, but event organisers will provide transport to and from race course start/finish for support crew and competitors. The details around this are dependent on the course selected, making it important for competitors to attend the Prologue Event on Friday Night 28th April 2017.

11. INTER-CLUB TEAM CHALLENGE!

This year for the first time, the2017 Giltrap | VW Auckland King and Queen of the Harbourintroduces the INTER-CLUB TEAM CHALLENGE. This is a prize that is offered to the club that scores the most points. Points will be ascribed to each competitor, as a percentage of the category winner's time, and all points will be added together to derive the Total Club Score score for each club. So, Taniwha Grizzlies, Royal Akarana, Bora Ocean Paddle, Bay Of Plenty, Huahine, you guys have got a way to go to catch the legendary Tefana club from Tahiti, who currently have 13-strong-team registered for this year's event alrerady!
